Sunrise to Sunset
Dovegate Prison, August 2008
This piece evolved out of exercises in traditional Javanese interlocking "imbal" techniques and music conversations in small groups. The men then devised new rhythms and tunes to make a complete piece including vocal improvisations.
Gammareggae
HMYOI Glen Parva, October 2005
This began as an improvisation exploring a range of different rhythmic influences. The men then decided to develop the reggae beat as well as adding JB's vocals.
Penjara Gembira (The Happy Prison)
Addiewell Prison's West Lothian Training Centre, February 2010
The group were very keen on being taught pre-set music and were taken aback at the idea of creating their own. Together we looked at the shape and structure of a traditional piece that we had already learned and selected some elements to create a structure. Within this new structure the group really began to let loose their creativity, taking turns to improvise.
Snowflake
Westbourne House (London Probation hostel), July 2009
This piece grew out of David's melody on the gender [metallophone], which we thought sounded a bit like a Scottish folk song, and it grew and grew as we added parts and new sections. By the end everyone agreed it sounded like snow falling.
RNK
Downview Prison's Josephine Butler Unit, July 2009
This was a challenging week for the young women. Credibility being an issue, this piece was definitely their favourite . "This beat is heavy!" was a comment from one. The piece was built from recordings of the young women playing the instruments. Then to each sample 'fx' were added and the texture of the sound manipulated. Lastly the arrangement was completed, giving the piece a more current/urban feel.
Chime Chants
HMP Wandsworth, April 2007
This group struggled to play a single piece the day before but gave a brilliant performance on the final day.
Rise Above The Walls
The Wolds Prison, September 2003
In the performance at the end of the week Nick started faster than ever before, which kept us all on our toes.
Ketawang Subakastawa
(Bestowing Honour) - Peterborough Prison (sung by Kirsten), April 2008
Kirsten was one of many great singers we've encountered in Good VIbrations. This is a traditional Javanese song.
Music
Downview Prison's Josephine Butler Unit, July 2007
The group reacted so positively to the drum loop that we found that they were bouncing around the room, it took a while to get them to calm down so we could put the singing on.
Conduction Number 1
Whitemoor Prison (conducted by Mikey), March 2008
A freestyle piece where we all made up our own beats and were brought in and out by Mikey.
